 The Astrological
Aspects

The Astrological AspectsAstrology is a language of symbols. A universal language which uses glyphs and symbols as its alphabet.
In the following we take a look at these symbols, this language, as it pertains to "The Astrological Aspects."

Aspects are measured in degrees along The Ecliptic. They are based upon fractional divisions of the 360 degree circle of the ecliptic and are measured in arc.(Arc being defined as a continuous portion of the circle).

Planets form "angles" to each other as they move through the heavens. This is called “planets in aspect” and they have on-going 24/7 communication with one another. The particular angle or aspect they form to each other describes the nature of their conversation. Therefore, their conversation inspires, directs, or warns of the energy at hand.

Factors Delineating the Effect of an Aspect

Many factors enter into the delineation of the effect of an aspect.

  • The nature of the aspect.
  • The character of the planets involved.
  • The latitude and rate of motion of the planets.
  • The aspects strength by virtue of its sign position.
  • The measure of "harmony" which takes place between the signs.

All these are under consideration. Generally speaking, aspects are "any blending of planetary rays, or strengths, that result in their inter-activity.”

About Hard Aspects, Soft Aspects, and Orbs

The Hard Aspects

The Hard Aspects are considered to have more energy and tend to activate, precipitate, catalyze and trigger events. They are found by taking the 360 degrees of the Zodiac, dividing it into two, and then continually dividing it by 2.

The Soft Aspects

The Soft Aspects are considered to have a lesser amount of energy and tend to harmonize, stabilize, vitalize, vivify, and improve the affects of negative or difficult aspects. They are found by taking the 360 degrees of the Zodiac, dividing it by three, and then continually dividing it by 2.

Orbs

The orb of a planet or aspect is basically the distance in longitude within which an influence operates. It is a set number of degrees within which a specific aspect is effective. It strengthens or weakens through distance.

Planetary Conversations

The Major Aspects

The Major Aspects are considered to be the strongest. They have greater impact and contain greater energy, power, and force.

There are five (5) major aspects, or "conversations," which take place between planets. They are:

  • Conjunction (0 degrees)
  • Sextile (60 degrees)
  • Square (90 degrees)
  • Trine (120 degrees)
  • Opposition (180 degrees)

The squares and the oppositions are regarded as the "Hard Aspects.” This means that they present challenges that we must overcome through facing them. The “Soft Aspects,” such as sextiles and trines, represent harmonious energies and ease. Conjunctions represent a powerful blending of energies which can be challenging or easy depending on the planets involved and their aspect to one another.

The Minor Aspects

The Minor Aspects are considered "less strong." They have lesser impact and contain lesser energy, power, and force. However, a little spark can cause a forest fire!

The minor aspects are:

  • Vigintile (18 degrees)
  • Semi-sextile (30 degrees)
  • Semi-square (45 degrees)
  • Quintile (72 degrees)
  • Sesquiquadrate (135 degrees)
  • Biquintile (144 degrees)
  • Quincunx (150 degrees)
  • Decile (36 degrees)
  • Novile (40 degrees)
  • Septile (57 3/7 degrees)
  • Tredecile (108 degrees)
  • Parallel
  • Contra-Parallel

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
