The Constellation
Aquarius

The Constellation AquariusThe constellation of Aquarius is located in the region of the sky that was known thousands of years ago as the “Sea,” "Sky Sea," or the “Water.” Aquarius shares this region with two other watery constellations by the name of Capricornus and Pisces.

The constellation of Aquarius is one of the most ancient constellations in the Zodiac. At this time, we are at the end of our current Age of Pisces and are on the cusp of our next age. The Age of Aquarius. An astrological age is identified by the name of the constellation in which the vernal equinox is located. This is the position of The Sun on the first day of Spring on or about March 21st. This location moves slowly from one zodiacal constellation to the next as a result of the Earth’s procession.

Aquarius History

There are 3 stars in Aquarius that refer to good luck. Sadalmelik, which means, “lucky one of the king”, Sadalsud, which means, “luckiest of the lucky”, and Sadachiba, which means, “lucky star of hidden things.” This is probably due to the fact that in ancient times, the constellation of Aquarius’s solstitial rising occurred at the start of the rainy season which brought much needed relief to the hot, arid, desert climates of the middle east.

Aquarius Mythology

Zodiac Sign of AquariusIn mythology, the constellation of Aquarius reveals a man or a boy pouring water from an urn. At times, Aquarius has been likened and identified with Zeus/Jupiter himself as he pours the waters of life down from the heavens to us on Earth.

One ancient myth portrays Aquarius as the Trojan Prince Ganymede, who was abducted by Zeus/Jupiter and taken to Mount Olympus to become the cup-bearer of the gods. It was Zeus/Jupiter who place Gandymede's image among the stars as Aquarius, The Water Bearer.

These myths were the roots of an alternate name for Aquarius which is "The Water Bearer."

Prior to this, the constellation of Aquarius was representative of an Egyptian god who watched over the Nile River and poured water from a flagon. As the Greeks had little interest in the Nile, it was changed.

The constellation of Aquarius is also mentioned in a very ancient Sumerian myth thought to be the story which gave rise to the global deluge as related in the Bible.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
