The Constellation
Cancer

The Constellation CancerThe constellation of Cancer is one of the best known constellations in the zodiac and the least conspicuous in the starlit sky.

About 2,500 years ago, The Sun reached it’s most northern position in the sky when it was in front of this group of stars. Today we refer to it as the Summer Solstice on June 21st.

Today, due to the precession of the equinoxes, The Sun’s northern most position lies in the constellation of Gemini. However, the old name has been preserved and the astrological period we call Cancer begins on June 21st, our modern day Summer Solstice.

Cancer History

Many astrological and ancient authorities exclaim this constellation received the name for a Crab because The Sun stops its northward motion through the sky and starts its move towards the south, or backwards, like a crab. The astrological symbol represents the claws of a Crab.

Within Cancer, there is also a beautiful cluster of stars that looks like a fuzzy cloud. This cluster of stars is called Praesepe and the ancients say that it looks like a thin spot or hole in the floor of heaven. They termed it the "Gate of Men" and it is said that through this hole souls descend to Earth to be born.

Cancer Mythology

Zodiac Sign of CancerIn Greek and Roman mythology, Cancer was a crab. It was sent by the revengeful Goddess Hera, (Juno in Roman mythology), to distract Heracles, (Hercules in Roman mythology), as he was battling the monster called Hydra. After Cancer struck Heracles, he stepped on the crab and killed it. Because Cancer failed to defeat Heracles, Hera did not give The Crab any bright stars to mark the constellation after placing it in the sky.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
