The Constellation
Libra

The Constellation LibraThe name Libra has come to be known as the “Scales of Balance.”

In the Roman era, The Sun entered Libra on the autumn equinox. This is where the constellation of Libra receives its name. The autumn equinox is balance! When the length of the day and the length of the night are almost equal, the scales are in balance.

There are four prominent stars, including the important star Algol, that make up the shape of the scales and they have also been interpreted as an altar. Thus, the astrological symbol for Libra is said to represent an "altar of balance."

Libra History

Long ago, Libra was part of a much larger constellation adjacent to it called Scorpius a.k.a. Scorpio. In its past positioning in the heavens, Libra’s brighter stars helped to form the claws of the scorpion. During the Roman era, Libra seems to have been made a separate constellation.

In ancient Egypt, the Egyptians always depicted Libra as a "balanced" constellation in their paintings.

Libra Mythology

Zodiac Sign of LibraAstraea, the Roman goddess of justice, is sometimes associated with the constellation of Libra as she balances the scales for truth and justice.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
