The Constellation
Scorpius

The Constellation ScorpiusThe long hooked tail of Scorpius stretches south and east toward the constellation of Sagittarius. Antares, which is the bright red star in Scorpius, marks the heart of the scorpion.

Because of the precession of the equinoxes, The Sun spends less time in Scorpius than in any other constellation in which it passes through.

Additionally, as it lies along the Milky Way, next to Sagittarius, the constellation of Scorpius is rich in interesting objects such as faint planetary nebulae and interesting diffuse nebulae.

Scorpius History

Over 2000 years ago, the constellation of Scorpius included the stars we now call the constellation of Libra, the "Scales and Balance." There is evidence of that in earlier pictures of the sky. For example, when viewing the constellation of Libra, its stars are shown for the claws of the scorpion. But the scorpion that graces the heavens today has no claws, and ironically, despite their absence, it looks more like its namesake than most other constellations.

Scorpius Mythology

Zodiac Sign of ScorpioThe constellation of Scorpius was placed in the sky by the spiteful Hera. Scorpio was the tiny scorpion which killed Orion with its sting.

The story unfolds in Greco-Roman mythology that Orion was a famed hunter. He boasted that he was the greatest hunter ever and that no beast could kill him. Hera, the Greek goddess, (the Roman goddess named Juno), decided to teach the hunter a lesson. She sent the tiny scorpion Scorpio to sting him. It stung him fatally and Orion and the scorpion were placed in the heavens. These enemies are never seen together in the sky. When Scorpius rises, Orion sets.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
